Logins Logins Logins!

Over the past couple of weeks we have started learning with devices.

Our first focus has been working through the activities and videos on Hectors World to teach about cyber safety.

The children have all been given their Bayview School Google login details. All students are able to access this acount from home on any device. This is the only account they are allowed to use when they are on a device at school. All of their login details should have been written in their homelink book.

We have also given them their personal login for Sunshine Classics where they all have a selection of books around their reading level. We encourage the students to complete at least one of the books and all related activities per week. The students need to email us if they need more books on the account. We can view what books and activities they have completed.

All students also have access to Sunshine Online. The children know the username and password for this.

Finally we have also given the students their Maths Buddy login. This is a website for them to develop their maths skills. They are in the initial stages of exploring this and seeing what the website has to offer them.

These are the only websites at this stage that we are using in Habitat 17. As the year progresses we will be teaching the skills of using other appropriate websites.

If you have any further questions relating to the use of devices please dont hesitate to talk to us.

Open-ended maths questions!

In Habitat 17 our focus for maths is solving open ended maths questions. These are questions that involve more than one answer and more than one way of solving the problem. We know some of Habitat 17 students have been coming home and sharing some of the maths they have been given with you.

Here is an example of one of the questions we have had a go at solving this week:

I have some marbles. I give some away to my friends and I am left with 15. How many marbles might I have started with and how many might I have given away?

e.g. I had 30 marbles and I gave 15 away so I am left with 15 marbles. To solve this prolem I used my knowledge of halves and doubles 15+15=30 or 30/2=15.

The focus of these questions is not on getting one correct answer but coming up with different to solve the problem. It is also explaining how the problem was solved by identifying what maths was required and what knowledge was needed. These questions are used to identify gaps in their knowledge that they can work on.

These problems are designed to be worked on collaboratively in mixed ability groups and adapted to suit all levels.

The children are finding these quite challenging as they are different to what they are used to. We have noticed that posing these questions is helping them to understand the process involved in solving real life mathematical problems and transferring their knowledge.

Newsletters Newsletters Newsletters!

Thank you to all those parents who attended our expectation meetings on Wednesday. If you were unable to make it your child should have come home today with a letter outlining the expectations that were covered at the meetings. This is could be one of the many newsletters that came home today. Make sure you read these as there is important information around camp, long bay picnic and other events.
